Fossil Fin Sheds Light on Evolution of Limbs

Living coelacanths have evolved specialized features that make the fish much different from their primitive, extinct relatives. A 400 million-year-old fossilized fin from a strange-looking, primitive fish is shedding light on how fins evolved into limbs that enabled animals to walk on land.

Was it the remnant of some forgotten military coastal defense from the war? Or could it possibly date back to something entirely different and profoundly older? 

In March 1995, a sport diver unintentionally strayed beyond the standard safety parimeter near the south shore of Okinawa. A battleground for the last land campaign of World War II, the island was about to become the scene of another kind of drama. As he glided through unvisited depths some forty feet beneath the clear blue Pacific, the diver was suddenly confronted by what appeared to be a great stone building heavily encrusted with coral.

Infra, Man

Satellite AKARI produced a new view of the entire sky in infrared. AKARI observed the infrared radiation emitted from heated interstellar dust at nine micrometers. The bright stripe extending horizontally is the disc of our own Milky Way Galaxy. Several bright regions corresponding to strong infrared radiation appear along or next to the galactic plane. These regions are sites of newly born stars. In the brightest region at the very center of the image, towards the center of our galaxy, old stars crowd together.
