Lost City of Helike

Greek writer Pausanias gave an account of how, in one night, a crushing earthquake destroyed the city of Helike, followed by a massive tsunami that swept away what remained of the once-flourishing metropolis.

The Achaean League capital was a worship center devoted to earth shaker and God of the sea, Poseidon.

No trace of the legendary society existed outside of ancient Greek texts until 1861 when an archeologist found Helike loot—a bronze coin with the unmistakable head of Poseidon.

In 2001, a pair of archeologists located the ruins of Helike beneath coastal mud and gravel and is currently trying to uncover the rise and demise of what some consider the "real" Atlantis.

Quote of the Day

Worrying is the most natural and spontaneous of all human functions. It is time to acknowledge this, perhaps even to learn to do it better.

Secret History

Hidden deep in a Russian forest, and guarded by soldiers with orders to shoot intruders on sight, the medical research laboratories on the outskirts of
Moscow were one of the Soviet Union's best-kept secrets.

So the carefully-vetted journalists who were allowed past the forbidding perimeter fence on a cold February morning in 1954 were both apprehensive and curious about what lay ahead.

Led to a courtyard outside an austere brick building, they waited in the bright winter sunshine to find out why they had been summoned. For a few minutes, only the sound of birdsong and the rustling of leaves filled the air but then a door slowly opened to reveal experimental surgeon Vladimir Demikhov - accompanied by the strangest looking animal they had ever seen.

Black Magic in Great Britain

England is positively crawling with witches, warlocks, wizards and water diviners.

There is a hardly a village in the Kingdom where you will fail to find someone gazing into a crystal ball, offering to tell your fortune, or getting involved in close encounters with "aliens." Forget Salem, when it comes to the occult, we've cornered the market.

Harry Potter isn't just a best seller and an international movie hit - it is real life for many in U.K. There are parts of England where one in ten of the people believe they have the power to teleport their neighbors - pick them up and spirit them away, literally. The northern county of Yorkshire, for example, is packed with telepathists, time-travelers, enchanters, mediums and astrologers.
