Altered States

The altered state of consciousness, or ASC, can be found throughout the paranormal.

It is the dream state, the trance of the medium, the state achieved in hypnosis, and maybe even the state we achieve when tired and suffering extreme emotion, when many paranormal events occur.

It is a state when our calibration of the senses seems to collapse and the mind creates its own ideas, often externalising them into the real world through hallucination.

But it is also the path of the mystic. Wilson and Maslow: British writer Colin Wilson gives us the best description of this state with his understanding of ‘close-upness.’

To Wilson, man has a very small view of reality; he sees the world from a ‘worm’s eye view’, unable to complete a world picture in his mind.

The Medicine Man

Native American Mysticism

One area of spirituality often ignored by the wider world is the Native American.

The Native American mystic is often known as the Medicine Man, principally because of his power to heal, but also to communicate with the ‘supernatural.’ A continuation of the early shaman, endemic to most tribal societies, he also bears many similarities to the guru.

The ‘Medicine Man' most likely survived from before the migrations across the Bering Strait over twenty thousand years ago. Mystical apprenticeship: Such a mystic is thought to be chosen by the ‘spirits’, indications of an ability to communicate with them beginning in childhood.

Continuing visions and omens will lead to the child being taught by an existing mystic. A right of passage for the growing mystic will be his first vision quest, of which he will have many in his life.

Somewhere in Phoenicia

Sevso Treasure

The Sevso Treasure is a hoard of silver objects from the late
Roman Empire, that may be illicit antiquities.

The treasure trove consists of 14 large decorated silver vessels and the copper cauldron which contained them, and has been dated to the late fourth or early fifth century AD.

Most notable is a large dish, 70 cm which bears the inscription:

Hec Sevso tibi durent per saecula multa

Posteris ut prosint vascula digna tuis

May these, O Sevso, yours for many ages be

Small vessels fit to serve your offspring worthily.

The location, archaeological context and provenance of the find remain unknown.

The Genetics of Politics

A study finds that biology strongly governs voter turnout.

Aristotle once noted, “Man is by nature a political animal.” What may be the first study to investigate this idea scientifically now controversially suggests that Aristotle may have been right.

The desire to vote or abstain from politics might largely be hardwired into our biology..

When it comes to predicting who will vote, researchers have looked at “everything but the kitchen sink,” says political scientist James Fowler of the University of California, San Diego. Theorists speculate on factors such as age, gender, race, marital status, education, income, home ownership, political knowledgeability and church attendance. But studies indicate that each one exerts only a small effect.

Fowler notes that people who vote often do so even when they know their lone ballot will not change the outcome of an election.

Image of the Day

Shining Sea

Glowing algae light up California’s largest lake. Taken on the southern shore of the Salton Sea, this eight-second exposure is lit from three sources: the moon overhead, the lights of a nearby power plant, and mysterious bioluminescent algae blooming in the water.

In case you wonder

For all the Ladies who think that I’m being disrespectful…

Let me make this clear.. I don’t disrespect the female gender. It doesn’t matter if you are male or female; I treat everyone with equal amount of respect. As a matter of fact I’m obsessed with the beauty of a woman. It’s like a light at the end of the tunnel that guides me through the darkness. It’s one of the main reasons that keeps me going. Despite all the knowledge about life there’s no better feeling then to have a beautiful woman next to you. I’m still looking for the one but my point is: whenever I see a beautiful woman I see an inspiration for my dreams that make me stronger.
