Running the Numbers

An American Self-Portrait
This new series looks at contemporary American culture through the austere lens of statistics. Each image portrays a specific quantity of something. The picture below depicts 8 million toothpicks, equal to the number of trees harvested in the US every month to make the paper for mail order catalogs.

“My hope is that images representing these quantities might have a different effect than the raw numbers alone, such as we find daily in articles and books. Statistics can feel abstract and anesthetizing, making it difficult to connect with and make meaning of 3.6 million SUV sales in one year, for example, or 2.3 million Americans in prison, or 426,000 cell phones retired every day.”

This project visually examines these vast and bizarre measures of our society, in large intricately detailed prints assembled from thousands of smaller photographs. “My underlying desire is to emphasize the role of the individual in a society that is increasingly enormous, incomprehensible, and overwhelming.” -- Chris Jordan --

The Alcohol Hangover

Is There a Hangover Cure?
Nausea. Headache. Decreased cognitive performance. Impaired memory and visual-spatial skills. Increased risk of strokes. When its symptoms are spelled out, the alcohol hangover looks like more than just a morning nuisance.

In addition, alcohol consumption costs businesses in the United States between $12 billion and $30 billion dollars per year in lost productivity (some estimates, though criticized for being inflated, run up to $148 billion). Unfortunately, there is no accepted remedy for the hangover other than tried-and-true temperance.

Big Pimpin'

The 5 Pimpingest Historical Figures

Philosopher of rap Ice-T once reflected that "Pimpin' ain't easy." We here at Cracked are inclined to agree. That's why these historical men deserve special commendation for bringing the bling, bitches and beatdowns to their reigns, while laying a stiff backhand across the face of convention and scoring major amounts of tang in the process.
They were, quite simply, the pimpingest men of all time.

Theridion Grallator

Found only on the islands of Oahu, Molokai, Maui, and Hawaii, the happy face spider, such as this one guarding its eggs on a leaf in Maui, is known for the unique patterns that decorate its pale abdomen. Scientists believe Theridion Grallator may have developed its distinctive markings to discourage birds from eating it.
